CUBS Dance Team

The CUBS Dance Team is a dance program based out of Mount Royal University. The team offers affordable classes in a welcoming atmosphere where anyone of all genders, abilities, and sizes are welcome to attend. Classes are held multiple times a week in a variety of styles and levels.

The CUBS Dance Team fosters a supportive and inclusive atmosphere focused on growth, discipline, and commitment. The club encourages all members to improve their technical skills, build confidence, and develop as both dancers and individuals in a respectful and welcoming environment.

Participants gain access to focused, quality training designed to improve dance technique, endurance, strength, and overall performance skills. The club provides a structured environment where dancers of all levels can grow through consistent practice, discipline, and goal-oriented development. Members are supported in refining their abilities, expanding their versatility across styles, and building the physical and mental stamina required for performance. Beyond training, dancers also gain confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging within a community that values growth, commitment, and excellence. In addition to regular team training, the CUBS Dance Team hosts a variety of relaxed, team-building events throughout the season. These gatherings provide a fun and supportive outlet from the busy schedule, helping members strengthen friendships, build community, and enjoy meaningful connections beyond the studio.

The CUBS Dance Team offers a range of programs designed to accommodate varying skill levels, interests, and time commitments. These include:

Performance Team: Focused on performing at university events, sports games, and community showcases. This team emphasizes showmanship, synchronization, and school spirit while maintaining strong technical standards.
Competitive Team: For dancers seeking a more intensive experience, the competitive team trains at a higher level and participates in local and provincial dance competitions. This program emphasizes advanced technique, endurance, and performance excellence.
Recreational Team: Open to all skill levels, these classes provide a fun and inclusive environment for dancers looking to stay active, learn new styles, and build confidence without the pressure of performance or competition.

Each program is designed to foster growth, discipline, and community, allowing members to choose the level of involvement that best suits their goals and lifestyle.

Competitive Team: The Competitive Team requires a higher level of commitment, with practices held twice weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays (1.5–2 hours each), plus a 2-hour technique training every Tuesday. Dancers on this team are expected to maintain consistent attendance, dedicate time to personal training, and participate in multiple competitions throughout March and April. This team is ideal for dancers seeking a challenging, performance-driven experience.
Performance Team: The Performance Team offers a moderate level of commitment, practicing Thursday evenings from 7–9 PM, with a 2-hour technique session on Tuesdays shared with the Competitive Team. Members are expected to perform at varsity games on Fridays and other university events throughout the season. This team suits dancers passionate about performing and contributing to school spirit.
Recreational Program: The Recreational Program provides a low-commitment option for dancers looking to stay active and engaged in a fun, inclusive environment. Classes are held Wednesday evenings for 1.5 hours, with no performance or competition requirements. This program is ideal for students who want to enjoy dance without the pressure of a rigorous schedule.

In the past, the CUBS Dance Team has actively engaged in community service, including volunteering at The Mustard Seed and organizing multiple donation drives for the Calgary Emergency Women’s Shelter. The team also regularly seeks out opportunities to support local initiatives, particularly through ongoing involvement with the FearIsNotLove nonprofit organization. Giving back to the community remains an important part of the team’s values and mission.

On Saturday, September 13th, 2026 the CUBS Dance Team will host auditions that allow those who are interested the opportunity to try out for our competitive and/or performance team.

New participants, and previous team members are required to register for the auditions using the appropriate link, posted via Instagram @mrucubsdanceteam, and our website.

The Performance and Competitive Teams strongly recommend prior dance experience, particularly in foundational styles such as ballet, jazz, lyrical, or hip hop. Additional training in styles like tap, contemporary, modern, or other performance-based genres is also highly valued, as it brings diversity and versatility to the team’s overall dynamic.

The Recreational Team welcomes dancers of all experience levels and does not require any prior training. It offers a great opportunity to explore a variety of dance styles in a supportive environment, while connecting with others from diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
