A fresh track forward: MRU embarks on major facility upgrades

MRU’s summer renovation project upgrades aging facilities with a fresh track, new turf space, and modern bleachers to enhance safety, accessibility, and community use.

Mount Royal University is breaking new ground this summer with an exciting renovation to the Indoor Track and Triple Gym facilities. Planning began two years ago as the existing bleachers, installed more than 20 years ago, were approaching the end of their lifespan due to regular wear and tear. As replacement plans began to take shape, an opportunity emerged to combine two much-needed upgrades into a single coordinated effort, resulting in one of the most significant projects since the facility was built.

The existing bleachers and track, installed in2002, have served the campus for over two decades. This renovation, including installing brand-new bleachers in current school colours and a resurfaced second floor which features a brand-new running track as well as a turf space for enhanced training capabilities. The flooring upgrades will enhance safety and accessibility, while aligning with MRU's brand identity.

"Structurally, the bleachers have always been safe, but with over 20 years of wear and tear, their lifecycle was nearing an end," says Director of Cougars Athletics and Recreation, Karla Karch. "This is a much-needed update to ensure our facilities remain functional, safe, and inviting."

Construction, which will officially kick off after Convocation in June and be completed by early September, is part of MRU's continued commitment to creating updated, safe, and well-maintained spaces that support students, Recreation Members, and the wider community.

During the renovation period, the Triple Gym, including the track and bleacher area, will be closed to the public. However, the Climbing Wall, Fitness Centre, Multipurpose Training Room, squash courts, Stanley Gym, studios, and pool will remain open.

"We've coordinated the logistics down to the finest details," says Karch. "From moving and storing equipment to ensuring safety protocols, the planning has been underway for nearly three years."

Despite the closure of the Track and Triple Gym, students and members won't be left without options. Court bookings will be relocated to the Stanley Gym and popular equipment will be moved to new spaces, with minimal disruption expected.

"This is actually the best time to do this," says Karch. "Summer is a quieter season with many members taking advantage of the weather and exercising outside. Although some rentals have been displaced due to this, the project was communicated at least a year ago in an attempt to get them placed in different locations on campus in the meantime."

Beyond varsity Cougars basketball and volleyball games, the bleacher renovations are an investment that will serve MRU's broader community. The space, which annually hosts, convocation, and public events, will benefit from a refreshed, accessible environment with a new design that emphasizes inclusive viewing areas for individuals.

"We're not upgrading to expand community outreach directly, but we know that making our spaces more welcoming and accessible benefits everyone," says Karch. "It's about doing the right thing, not just the required thing."
